The course will deal with the history and definition of bioethics and its main theories. Some moral questions raised by biotechnological innovations in the medical field will be addressed.

Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the ability to analyze bioethical issues and to apply philosophical knowledge to concrete cases in an interdisciplinary context. Furthermore, the course aims to provide tools to reach an independent and mature judgment on the moral issues addressed and to be able to discuss the main bioethical issues.
Prerequisites
Bachelor’s degree. Basic knowledge of ethics.

Type of Assessment
The final test will be oral. It aims to verify the correct assimilation of knowledge, the ability to apply the ethical-philosophical categories and reasoning to biomedical cases and to develop an autonomous thought on the topics addressed in the course.
Course program
Topics of the first part of the course will be the history, the definition, and the main theories and concepts of bioethics. Some questions will be examined, such as assisted fertilization, abortion, euthanasia, termination of medical treatments, research ethics, allocation of health resources. In the second part of the course, the ethical problems raised by biotechnology applied to the human, animal and vegetable sphere will be discussed, especially cloning, genetic modifications, stem cells, creation of human-animal chimeras.
